The man who 'attacked' Justin Bieber outside a New York department store on Thursday (June 23) was an undercover cop.

TMZ.com reports the scary encounter was all a big misunderstanding between the pop star's security team and police.

The website claims a member of Bieber's personal security team was cited for disorderly conduct when he challenged a plainclothes police officer, who rushed to help the singer when the crowds outside the Macy's store became unruly.

Bieber had no idea who the guy was and fought him off.

During the fracas news got out that the Baby singer had been attacked.

The fuss quickly got sorted out and Bieber returned to signing autographs inside the department store as he launched his new perfume Someday.
